JT was the son a black sharecropper who, aside from having to deal with racism and poverty, never learned to read. His problems in this area start the first day of school when his teacher, Miz Jackson, whips JT, who stutters, when he won’t say his ABCs in front of the class. JT never recovers from this. He stays home with his parents and eventually works the fields with his father and brother. Only his family knows that he can’t read. JT eventually leaves home, after a fight with his father, and works for Jake Fenton, a storeowner. JT and Dover, his best friend, sign up to fight in WWII. His greatest fear is that someone will find out that he can’t read. He doesn’t tell Dover. After the war JT heads north to find work. He meets his wife and due to his ingenuity and determination he is able to build a successful life. The one thing he is unable to do is erase his shame at not being able to read. After retirement he seeks help from the local college, but they are unable to assist. JT eventually is directed to the Greenville Literacy Association where he erases his shame and learns to read.
