Media Web Critique of Many Stones by Carolyn Coman based on ODIE by the Printz Group

Summary: Carolyn Coman introduces a character that compels readers to enter the story-world of Many Stones. At the onset of the novel, the character, Berry, finds herself alienated from everything she has grown up with as she deals with the violent killing of her sister, Laura. Berry is misunderstood by parents and friends, and withdraws even from her love of sports, quitting the swim team though she finds solace in the heavy solitude of the water. When her father decides that they should contribute to the cause for which Laura advocated, he insists on raising money through a swim-a-thon, and Berry swims until her limbs refuse to cooperate—more for an escape than for a contribution. The money goes to the school in Cape Town, South Africa, where Laura volunteered, and to the community in which she was murdered. To compound Berry’s grief, her father determines that they will go to the school to take part in a memorial service where Berry will hand deliver the swim-a-thon donation. The trip with her father forces Berry to scrutinize her own life, as she learns of South Africans embroiled in struggles bigger than she could have imagined. Berry and her father visit a prison that housed Nelson Mandela for 25 years, and Kruger National Park. Through the journey, Berry’s actions, sometimes crass, other times miserable, belie the silence she holds so close to herself. By the end, she and her father have faced their misery, and Carolyn Coman offers a hope for both that had once seemed so unattainable.

Values: Many Stones comprises so many values and themes. The main character deals with grief and alienation as she tries to overcome a tragic event in her life. As she deals with her pain, she moves from misery, to alienation, to anger. What adolescents could not relate to these feelings? In addition, Berry shows compassion for the plight of the South Africans fighting apartheid, who have also lost family members. She experiences first-hand the suffering of people who have suffered for so long. This introduction of apartheid surely pulls the theme of equality into the discussion of Many Stones, and how different cultures deal with suffering. As Berry deals with these conflicts, she and her father suffer through an alienated relationship—another common theme with youth today. She recognizes, though, when her father is showing real emotion, and begins to understand him as the story progresses. The plot reflects how Berry matures as she experiences South Africa; the story is a true Bildingsroman

Response-Based Activities: How many great ideas came out of our chat on Many Stones! Recognizing the journal-like approach of the author, Michelle suggested having her students maintain a response journal on moments of grief. This made Nan think of creating a fictional character which students could use to move through the steps of dealing with grief; both decided that this would allow more openness for shy students, though the journals would probably be somewhat self-reflective. Students could also do a parallel study of South African culture, integrating music, art, dance, other writing, or foods into their study. Perhaps a presentation of their study would allow all students to share in a South African experience. Students could do a focus study of historical figures dealing with conflict, both internal and external, and then compare those dealings with their own experiences with conflict. Perhaps they could create a wall chart of people and characters, which delineates the type of conflict and the responses of the people or characters. Nan also recognized other novels and movies with an African setting: Out of Africa, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, and Cry, the Beloved Country. Offering students a chance to read Many Stones as they read these novels, which are included in the 10th grade NC Curriculum, would allow students a more personal doorway into the literature and the culture.
