The Novel:

The Body of Christopher Creed, by Carol Plum-Ucci is a recent winner of the Printz Award, published in 2000. It is a mystery, and it contains a frame device that introduces the reader to the action after it has happened, from the point of view of Torey Adams. Torey is a senior at a boarding school who is looking back on events from his past experience at another high school in his small hometown. He begins "reading" a memoir he has written of these events, and the reader experiences them as if they are happening right then. A well-liked town kid, Torey has many advantages over the "Boons," or poorer county teens. He has a cute girlfriend, he plays football, and he has never been in any serious trouble. His world--and the world of the small town of Steepleton--becomes engulfed in sudden change when Chris Creed disappears. Chris is the teen everyone loves to hate; he has a constant goofy grin and will not stop talking to people even when they tell him he's annoying them. He's shunned by most, and he even has been pushed off the bleachers by one of the Boons with the worst reputation. Torey and many others begin to question why Chris disappered, but Torey seems to change and mature as he wonders about the isolation and stereotyping that occurs in this town. He becomes more involved with Ali and Bo, two teens who are also on the social fringe for various reasons, and he begins to examine all people with a different lens. The three get caught by the police in some suspicious-looking activities that the teens thought would help them discover the truth about Chris's disappearance. Rumors and back-stabbing abounds in the small town as Torey and Bo become suspects in Chris's murder--or disappearance, at least. Mrs. Creed, Chris's mother, seems out to get the boys and blame the disapperance on them. The townspeople are reminded of the old story of Digger Haines, who disappeared one day, and whose father (Bob Haines) eventually disappeared as well, so desperate was he for answers. Finally, in a strange conclusion, Torey finds the body of Bob Haines in a Native American tomb. He thinks at first that it is Chris, and he has to undergo months of psychological treatment to help him get over seeing the body disintegrate upon hitting oxygen. (That's the strange part). Torey ends the narrative that he has written and put on the computer by explaining that he has a website on which he tells the story and sends email to people with the same names as any of the people involved. The novel ends with some of the replies Torey has received, and one man thinks that Chris just doesn't want to be found right now.

Values/Themes:

We found several interesting values and themes to discuss with this novel. Chris seems to have had an effect on many people in the town after he left. Gwen suggested at one point that Chris was a "silhouette"; Nan made the observation that "the environment that creates these people doesn't allow them to accept one another." The importance of good parenting was a major issue we found. There were three different types of mother characters in this novel, and they seemed to highlight the impact that families and parents have on their children. Chris's mom seemed almost to abuse Chris emotionally by her constant control. Chris found a way to cope by writing a journal that Torey and his new friends later find to contain a lot of imaginative embellishments of the truth. We found that many of the characters and situations came back to their views of reality and how they dealt with suffering. The novel contains realistic portrayals of the ways social status and the views of other people can have a crushing impact on how one behaves. Role models and the expectations for how different people act were interesting and very valid issues raised in this novel.

Teaching/Using the novel with Young Adults:

This novel is very timely, sad to say, because it ties in so well with the hurt that teens and even adults cause each other in society, hurts that are not even physical. School shootings, isolation, and teasing are serious issues that this novel either addresses or brings to mind. There are many character lessons in this novel, and Gwen pointed out that communities need to work with schools to help solve these problems. Nan suggested an analysis of different people in the novel and how that matches with society's expectations for different types of people in life. Michelle thought students could create a journal that Chris would write after he left the town or a letter that he would email to Torey through the web site Torey made. Students could also create a web site through Students Against Violence Everywhere and have a bulletin board to talk about isolation or other issues. Nan then suggested that students could take on roles--Chris, Ali, etc., and Gwen suggested that they compare their experience as that particular character. Michelle suggested that this activity could be a discussion or role play, and Nan said that teachers could assign them to role play a personality type different than their own. We felt the novel was valuable as a whole.
